| Quote ="marillion man"So, what you're saying Mr. Y is that the club should get rid of what those club employee's inside the everyday workings of the office say is a decent, reliable volunteer and increase their own workload ? Or, are you saying the club should increase the wage bill and employ someone on the books to do the work ?
Or am I reading this wrong ?'"
You are reading this wrong. It's not 'A' reliable volunteer, there are 2 that I can think of off the top of my head. What constructive work is done by these could easily be covered by a Part Time employee who is committed to doing the job right due to it being their paid employment.
We also need a Full Time Marketing/Promotions/Sponsorship/PR person who should easily bring in far more than their wage, so long as they have a proven track record.

The only problem with this is that original signatures are needed on the standing order form. Therefore people have to print them off.

Would it be a good idea to let everyone know not only on this message board but at the match on Sunday via regular pitch anouncements just where Richard from the lottery will be ? Maybe Neil in the bar could also make people aware too.

This is what the RFL are willing to contribute to
But what exactly would you see this persons particular aims to be ?
You say ' Marketing ' ?
Promotions ?
Sponsorship ?
Public relations ?
Can you explain how one person can achieve all these things on their own and what sort of budget they would have / need to have to achieve anything ?

Ok, Marketing and Promotions and PR would intertwine.
Getting the club in the news at every possible opportunity.
Get a representative, player, past player, Halicat, Director, Coach to the opening of an envelope in order to get maximum exposure at all times.
Get the club advertising upto date and interesting.
Get the club at the various Galas, School Fetes, around town.
Writing press articles.
Come up with new and interesting advertising angles.
Sponsorships would entail going out and getting new sponsors and advertisers, diners, hospitality box bookings etc.
Quote Can you explain how one person can achieve all these things on their own '"
With good time management and admin backup it would be achievable, as some are concentrated at particular times of year, such as getting advertisers and sponsors with a season long contract, then there is obviously some additional work if the advertiser/sponsor wants to do additional stuff during the season.
If the position is commission based, the more they bring in, the more they earn, and the commission should be linked to a %age of the profit of the deal rather than the income generated (if it costs £200 to give a sponsor a £300 sponsorship package, commission would be due on the £100).
Quote and what sort of budget they would have / need to have to achieve anything '"
They would need to be allocated a budget for the advertising or negotiate contradeals with the likes of the Courier as they have done in the past. Howmuch the advertising budget would be, I haven't a clue, but so long as it's budgeted for and there is regular monitoring that the sales are on target, it should work. If it's not, then they need to find out why.

| having worked in the office previously, i feel i need to stick up for everyone involved in the club as they all pull together and help each other out. this makes sticking to a job description very hard, but is unavoidable when you have 3 or 4 people doing 6 or 7 people worth of jobs.
with regards to how much one person could achieve in marketing, well they could achieve quite alot. the jobs that yob mentioned all fall under marketing banner, but to be honest i personally feel sponsorship in a sports club should come under the commercial managers job as it is such an important aspect. it often involves quite a hard sell, experience and alot of time and effort.
with regards to things like PR, internet marketing, promotions, design, personal selling (in the form of going round the schools, shops, stalls etc) and direct marketing, well this could all be archived by one person as long as they hard a good work ethic and they knew what they were doing.
however the key here is that one person would only be able to do all these things in a basic, but very professional, manner. in my opinion that is all the club needs right now as they have the team doing all it can on the field, and there is no better selling point from an ad man's position than a product that works, and works well.
the other main thing is that this person would need to be able to concentrate on their sole duties. as i said earlier that is made hard in an office where there are many more jobs than people.
if these basics can be done then i personally feel that crowds can increase significantly, at least enough to make their appointment worth while. however at present, the current office team works very hard, has some very gifted volunteers, and should be helped as much as possible from fans who have time and talents to offer. yes sometimes volunteers can cause a few problems, but nothing that couldn't be managed. the alternative of having no volunteers is a much more severe negative.

Dont take this the wrong way but there is too much David Brent ' management speak ' in there
The one word missing is the most important
FANS
Your club like ours and all the other need more FANS
You like us and all the rest in this league will never be able to bring in large sponsorship/corporate investment
Because of your location and the discrimination that entails your club will never get a serious investor to bankroll your club in the championship
You need FANS , lots of them , loyal young fans that will be there for all there life at some time or other , they will drift away from attending for all sorts of reasons but they will remain Halifax RL FANS and eventually they will return , possibly with their children because by then you will be working hard to entice them down to the SHay to follow THEIR club , THEIR team , In THEIR town
Yes try to get business involved with your club , but nothing can compare with simple straight forward FANS
To get FANS you need to be proactive [ good David Brent word that you need to be in the town centres ,supermarkets , you need to convince the parents of these fans with free ' samples '
Come down to the Shay , we are inviting YOU to YOUR club
A totaly different approach to Marketing is needed ,
You have to ask youself the questions ' who are we marketing to ' , ' what would get me [ a person who has never been to the Shay in my life to go
Ask the question " Have you ever seen Halifax play ? , why not , come down to the Shay , here is a ticket , bring your grandchildren , we will make sure they enjoy it
Much more is needed'"
You don't say

| In our sport there is far too much enfasis on the corporate ' Dollar ' , on sponsorship and selling merchandise
Do any of those things help the atmosphere at the Shay ?
What made the hairs on your back stand up or your spine tingle when you first witnessed a big crowd watching your team ?
On boxing day 1970 my uncle for Xmas took me to Old Trafford
Up to that point I had visited Burnden park , Bolton once with my father [ I was too young to remember and my father said I was a pain in the harris that day and had attended matches at Hilton park wit free comp tickets with my mates
Nothing prepared me for the atmosphere that 58,000 people at OT created
I was sold on that day and became a Man Utd fan
I am a Leigh fan quite simply because it is MY town
I moved to the other side of the world but eventually returned to my home town
MY town , where MY team play
How many people life in Halifax ?
How many of those people have never seen Halifax RL team play ?
How many of those people have not seen Halifax RL team play this year ?
Getting those people down should be the primary aim for your club , once down then it is up to you to keep them coming back

So, you are saying that Malcoplm Powell as a volunteer at the club is not worth the time he puts in, and, a part part time person would do a better job just because they get paid.
Here's a challenge for you Mr YOB, get someone to do it better than me and I'll stand down.

For what it's worth, I think you do a brilliant job and I am disgusted at Yob's comments.
Apart from that I think it is risible that he seems to believe that an employee is more committed to the job than a volunteer. An employee, generally speaking, is more likely to do what they are paid to do and no more whereas a volunteer, particularly in this situation, brings with it a passion for the work otherwise he/she would not volunteer. They are not getting any other remuneration than a sense of satisfaction in a job well done.
I would agree, however, that at the higher end, e.g. Marketing Manager, PR, etc., if finances allow, a suitably qualified and experienced person is required but, as Yob was referring to part-time personnel, I don't believe he was referring to these sorts of positions.

| I think without knowing the full story people should reserve judgment before having a go at yob.I'm sure if they were in his position they would feel the same.you get someone like that who comes in to the job and does a fantastic job, brings lots of fresh ideas about how things can be improved and what happens? He gets treated like poop is what happens therby probably costing the club thousands in lost sponsorship money. But it's all good because the staff that forced him out are doing a "great"job.

| well, i have no idea wats gone on in the past, and dont really want to, but im one for forgeting about the past and looking to the future, which is what this whole topic was about!
some great ideas have been put on here and im sure that the club will be looking at implementing some of them to increase crowds, which is wat the club needs,
from the outside looking in... over the last 3years the club seem to have become so much more organised and professional, and that is obviously down to hard work and pulling in the same direction from people right across the club, staff, players and fans!!! lets just hope this continues and gets us back where we belong, starting on sunday!
