Cheers guys.
I basically followed this tutorial:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=asx13Ah_ ... ature=plcp
Then it's just a matter of finding a suitable location and getting it right.
I now keep my lights in the camera bag as something to add something different to a scene, or something I can use as a fall back if conditions or scenes aren't as I'd want.

| Thanks for that Iain, I'd love to have a go at that. I've had a go at doing light trails and because we go camping and it gets very dark in the middle of an unlit field you can get some good result. Will have to try this next year!

| At the end of last year I purchased a Nikon D3100 with the aim of getting in to photography. As it was relatively cheap and was a beginners SLR complete with guide I thought it would be the best suited to my needs.
Unfortunately between work, getting married and having a baby all within a few months of buying the camera I haven't really had the opportunity to take many photo's with my new gadget.
I'm now finding myself with a bit more time on my hands to play around and, as the missus is pestering me for Christmas present ideas I thought I would look in to getting a new lens.
However, I'm not sure what to get. Budget not being massive (more than likely around £100, but under would be better!) I have found the following two.
[url=http://www.onestop-digital.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=33528Link 1[/url
[url=http://www.simplyelectronics.net/mainproduct.php?pid=2376&sd=contLink 2[/url
I like to take close ups of flowers, bugs etc. But also take the usual portrait of the baby and anything I see out and about.
Would anyone be able to give me some advice on which to get, either between the two links or if anyone can recommend any others. I would be most grateful

| Speaking of new lenses, I recently got my dad a Tamron 70-300mm lens for his Nikon D5000 - but when I took it to his this week to give to him and start using, it wouldn't work!
The lens connected to the camera with no probs, but nothing happens when you turn the camera on - nothing on the display or nothing when you press the shutter button to take a pic...
Anyone know why?? :/

Contact Tamron for any known issues, they do not licence the technology from Nikon (or Canon for that matter) they reverse engineer, a new(ish) camera may cause issues with older lenses.
Same happens with Sigma to a certain extent, I've a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 that won't talk to my Canon 7D.

I looked at several 70-300mm lenses in a price range I could afford (lower end have F4.5/5.6 as largest aperture) for my Pentax, I looked at performance tests and in most the Sigma came out very well, so I bought the 70-300mm APO Macro and it works very well. One point I will make is that I looked at it new for around £150 and actually got it off E-bay for £83. They come up regularly.

You want to take photos of things close up but link to two 70-300mm lenses, I think you are buying into lens company hype with this macro tag, all it means to them is you can get a little closer to the thing you are photographing, my old Sigma 70-200 f2.8 is tagged as a macro lens because the minimum focal length is under 1 METRE!!!
The Sigma 50mm f2.8 macro is a cracking lens that you can pick up reasonably cheap on eBay, you get true macro ability and it doubles as a half decent 50mm portrait lens.

When I shot film with a Canon EOS650 and EOS600 the consumer version of the 70-200 was by far my favourite lens and it looks like the pro version has continued to set the bar very high.
I don't know if this is 100% of the capture or whether it's already been cropped but, resolution permitting, I'd love to see a crop showing just the bird taking off in (roughly) the centre of the frame with all other distractions either cropped or cloned out.

Only slight cropping to remove a fence so I'll have a go at that tonight

I've had a play with the Lomo-ish editing tool on the latest version of Picasa, not the same I know but you can get some reasonable results.

That's opened my eyes to a whole new level of taking pictures. I'm not keen on instagram and things like that, but I love film. I have a Canon A1 and I also have my FD lens mounted to my A series Sony DSLR.
It looks like this may be my new obsession - GoPro can step aside for the time being.

There's a pretty well established Lomo scene in Manchester, and a Lomo Wall art installation opened this year:
cityco.com/initiative/lomowall-manchester/
I've got one of the lomo cameras that takes 4 images on the same photo, with a slight time lapse, and have been tempted to get a standard lomo or holga camera, but the cost of film and processing has been a put off.
