This photo from an Under-11s soccer match was shot with my Nikon D600 and Nikon 80-200 f./2.8 using the 3D Auto-focus mode.
Details: Raw; Manual mode (1/500s, f.6.7); Auto-ISO (180); cropped to A4 aspect ration in Lightroom.
The picture shows my grandson (in blue with the ball) reacting to the referee's whistle having just been caught offside.
You can see that the focus is not where I would have wanted it. Straightforward user-error. Wrong choice of AF mode.
But the body language of my grandson's team-mate ensures it's a keeper!'"
Ha! I'm loving that little lad as well!

| What the 'eck. Self portrait. Taken yesterday. Canon 40D; Sigma macro. All the household lights I could muster, plus a small lamp pointing up from waist height. No airbrushing; no make-up except a little brow pencil (advancing decrepitude means they're faint, otherwise).

I've done it four times now, but it's an odd thing, in that the results tend to look very different to any pictures other people have taken of me. And of course, the 'camera doesn't lie' in the same way that a painting or sketch might. I'm never quite sure how I feel about the results, to be honest – because they're never what I expect. They're not what I see in other pictures – or even in the mirror.

I will, somewhere, have pictures (albeit B&W) taken in full make up as The Wicked Witch of the West in a stage production of [iThe Wizard of Oz[/i. I really must root them out and scan them.

God, I remember being terrified by Helpmann's performance when that came out.
Playing the witch was great fun – I got to terrify small children every night for a week, plus matinees.

| Wondering if anyone would be able to provide a spot of editing advice please?
Whats the best way to reduce the glare on this shot in Photoshop? We're happy with the shot, and wanted the sun light, but it's just a little too bright. Is there a way to bring it out and highlight the faces a bit better?

The midges I'll clear with a clone stamp.

| I downloaded the largest size available from flickr.
There are two completely separate issues here.
The faces can be "brought back" with the DODGE tool. I suggest starting on the midtones at 25% strength and building up to the skin tone you want. Small, feathered brush. Leave the hair alone.
The sunlight is another matter. Generally, it's possible to compensate for under-exposure but once an image is blown it's blown. You can't bring back detail that was never recorded in the first place.
The exposure actually isn't TOO far off. There's plenty of detail in the white t-shirt. It's the position of the subjects that's the main problem - i.e. shooting straight into the Sun.
The image posted on flickr is JPG. If there's a RAW version you'd have a better chance but it'd still be a very slim one.

I'll have a play. Thank you.
Was a nightmare trying to capture because I was propping the camera on a table, then running round to get in the shot.

No problem.
BTW: you'll find the SPOT HEALING BRUSH to be much easier to use (and in this case more efficient) than the CLONE tool.
Just set the brush size to slightly bigger than a midge - one click and it's gone. No need to select a source area.

I had a quick play using Serif PhotoPlus X5, which is quite good at this sort of situation, is this better raw material for you?
That one looks better on my screen at work, but the next one looks better on my home PC

| Tried to get my lenses as clean as possible and then did a test shot. I rather like it.
The weird line that you might be able to see on the left side, is a spiders web.
