| Quote ="Saddened!"Watched the Guns n' Roses show from Rock in Rio last night. I must say Mr Rose made a complete fool of himself. He's always been arrogant and a bit self-defeating but this was a pearler. He turned up overweight and without rehearsing with the band. Because it was raining he wore a yellow rain jacket, looking like a yellow version of Paddington Bear.
He then went on to mess up the intros to Patience and completely forget the lyrics to November Rain. He tried to improvise Knocking on Heavens Door and messed that up as the band had no idea what he was doing. His voice sounded like a 7 year old on helium.
I've always defended him in the past as I loved the band, but he needs to retire. He clearly doesn't enjoy doing it anymore, so I don't see why he bothers. The guitarists he's got with him are absolutely fantastic and it's such a shame they are wasting their careers being messed about by Axl.'"
Saw these clowns at Reading last year. An abomination and embarrassment to the name GNR.

I wrote them off after MEN last year.
He's become a parody.

I just don't understand why he does it. The going on late, refusing to rehe and the being out of shape I can understand, he's arrogant and hates being told what to do. BUT, why do it at all if you don't enjoy it? People will say it's for the money, but he's been sat on an absolute goldmine for years and not wanted it. He could do one tour with the old band and make as much money in a year as he will ever do on his own.

The only reason i can think of is that he does need the money.
Im no expert on the complications of making Chinese Democracey but wasnt it the most expensive album ever or something?
Who knows what else he's been spending his money on locked up in his house in Malibu?

Because he has an ego the size of a planet.
He just can't accept that the original success of G'n'R was down to anyone apart from himself. It's a shame because they were the real deal.

They were of their time.....They emerged at a time when rock music was very cheesy (Kiss, Bon Jovi, Poison, etc), and everyone seemed to have bad haircuts and pretty ropey tunes....Thus, Guns n' Roses were a breath of fresh air because they had the right attitude and some solid tunes.
Grunge, and in particular Nirvana, pretty much knackered them....Suddenly, they looked dated themselves and were never helped by the impossibly slow output of music.
What might have been interesting would be if Axl Rose had croaked it at the time Cobain did, instead of the Nirvana man....We would probably have a never ending patronage of a 'great band', with Axl being a tortured, misunderstood soul and Nirvana would probably have gone the way of G n' R and become a parody of their former selves.

They split at the right time, and UYI should have been condensed into one album - it would have almost matched AFD in quality had they done that.
What Axl has become should never detract from what GnR, the REAL GnR, were.

I disagree, there was room enough for both of them plus quite a few others, you mentioned two who kept going selling out stadiums quite nicely.
They sold out Wembley three times in a year even after the length of time it took them to follow up Appetite, what put an end to them was the failure to follow up the disappointing Use Your Illusions albums with anything more than a re-hash, that has to lay at Axl's feet no one elses.

I agree they could have continued, and sold a lot of records, but Nirvana took the baton off G n' R and ran a very long way with it.....Axl & co would have needed to have re-invented themselves (which I think Slash definitely would have been able to), but Axl became a parody of himself and simply lost the plot, which indicates he never quite had the talents to go long term.
I'm pretty biased because I must admit to prefering Nirvana, but I always had a soft spot for G n' R (though I did find Axl a berk!!).....Looking back, they should have quit while ahead.

'They' did. Only Axl carried it on. The Nirvana stuff is absolute nonsense as well. Just because another big band emerged, it doesn't mean another has to die. Daft stuff.

What makes you think Slash would of been more able to re-invent himself? Have you listened to Snakepit or VR? its hardly pushing the boundaries of origanality.
In terms of creativity Axl was the one who wanted to experiment and change the bands sound and direction, something which he achieved with the help of the rest of the band but songs like Estranged, November Rain etc were very much created because of Axl's vision for the band - something which Slash and Steven Adler alude to in their books.
What is most remarkable of all is that despite Axl's behaviour people are still willing to pay lots of money to see his band in large arenas.

It would seem he's back to being Mr Bipolar. Whilst Rio would have reason to ban him from ever returning, those in Santiago Chile were given a decent performance from him. Watching some of Ron Thal's work from it now, he's fabulous.

I think its intentional and a way of getting the media and the public to talk about Guns N' Roses.
Out of the whole set from Rock In Rio i did think that Estranged was pretty good - probably the highlight of the show for me and a song i have never seen them perform live - except on the Tokyo video they released in the early 90's.
Your right though, the other members of the band are all superb.

| I always considered GnR to be the last great 'classic' rock band. Traditional format, lots of straight line through to the roots of heavy rock references in both their music and their appearance.
Nirvana were a completely different kettle of fish - primarily blending punk and rock, although not a new idea, they managed to go off in a different direction.
It's like comparing The Sex Pistols and Rod Stewart in the 70s. Both were huge and contemporary, but had very little common ground. If you want to compare GnR to anyone from that era, I'd suggest the poodleheaded Jon BonGiovi and his band.

| On the topic of Guns N' Roses some of their work on AFD and UYI is very similar to Mike Monroe and Hanoi Rocks.
Check out the vid to Mike Monroes 'Dead, Jail or Rock N'Roll' and it sounds very similar to 'Bad Obsession' with the harmonica - Axl features in the video.

Pretty sure he was involved in the UYI stuff, he's mentioned in the album notes a few times.

ha ha just checked and its actually Mike Monroe who plays the harmonica in the studio version of 'Bad Obssesion' - one of my favourite GNR songs.
