| Quote ="Big Graeme"1. This thing called rent paid for the repairs and upkeep it even paid for new homes to be built, remember that the vast amount of social housing at the time was used by those in work.
2. No it went to keep the failed poll tax (another example of social engineering) low for the rich in their big homes.
If you maintain that selling off the housing stock was not social engineering then you don't know what social engineering is.'"
1. Council rent rarely did. Especially in London with the GLC
2. Poll Tax wasn't social engineering. It was about what the Tories (and me for the record) considered fairness. Very simple, you pay in line with what you take. More people = more strain on resources e.g. more rubbish generated, more use of libraries etc
Nothing at all wrong with this imo.
I think it is you who needs to look up the definition of social engineering.

| Quote ="cod'ead"Go back through the thread and you'll find my specific argument is the unfairness of including a universal benefit (child benefit), in the total allowed. It penalises those with more children harder.
That has been my argument all the way through the thread and you, XBrettKennyX and Coach have completely ignored the unfairness of such a system'"
To be fair if you look through we haven't we have kept to the topic which is anything over 26k is no way ho say if child benefit is included in that then tough for them 26k is more then enough to bring up a child do you agree or not.
I didn't want this argument with a fellow black and white and on our board i agree with alot you say but it is time to get tough on people that take the in our society. I scraped by for over a year, some of my friends will tell you on here at my own business there wasn't a lot of work in Hull i was way under the bread line nearly lost my house i didn't claim once because i shouldn't of got myself into that position and i was determined to pull myself out of it (these footballers don't know what struggling is and depression)
I will not here after been a lot worse off then most for a period of my life that 26k is not enough it is an absolute joke people think they have a right to be looked after and im sorry they don't. You get out of life what you put in but it took me to go right to the bottom before i could come back up again i now travel everyday to Leeds to work. I work most weekends also still doing my work i did before but it wasn't busy enough in Hull for what i did some i became full time employed again also. The work is out there if you want it !!

Of course it isn't "all", there are of course geniune cases (and I have absolutely no problem supporting them).
There are, however, way too many scroungers who choose not to work.

£26,000 for 3 kids is 722.22 per kid per month you need more then that then they can get off there ar$e and get a job.
One kid could pay the mortgage one all the bills and you have 722.22p left to blow on what ever they want a month

Because they do, you are very naive, there are some that don't but the ones that do should be stripped of everything and there kids taken off them. I'd even make sure they couldn't have any more as well till they can prove to be responsible adults.

See I'd like them to work for a living too (as I'm sure many of the families in that situation would) but we have a slight problem of 2.18m more people out of work than we do vacancies, even those desperate to get a job can't get one.

Our friends who live in Scotland (and that is who will get a vote) are big enough to decide for themselves.

Please point to where I have said anything of the kind.
I have no problem with targeting benefits cheats. I do have a serious problem with broad-brush, simple-fix "solutions" that do nothing to address a problem, yet seem to appease the narrow minded by lumping the majority good in with the tiny minority bad.

Not to mention the fact that our government is happy to target the poorest and most vulnerable in society in order to score a few cheap points with Daily Mail readers, yet somehow rather less comfortable in tackling the issue of big business dodging billions of pounds worth of tax.

You really don't get this economics thing do you BG?
If it were so easy to wave a magic wand, create jobs then EVERYONE would be doing it.
What you need to do is create the CONDITIONS to allow people to create jobs.
Remove bureaucracy, ensure inflation is low, ensure taxes are low, reward enterprise, penalise laziness.
i.e. entirely the OPPOSITE of what Labour did.
The current coalition is trying to get back to this by sorting out the mess that they inherited.

Even if there are no jobs, I don't see 2.68 million people volunteering to help people less fortunate than themselves via charities, in hospitals, etc in exchange for their assistance. Surely, that would be the decent thing to do?

Ah, just think of all the revenues from North Sea gas that went to fund the scrapping of industry and the throwing of people and communities onto the scrapheap – and with that, the concomitant creation of welfare dependency.
What an investment that was.
