| I need a new suit. More for casual wear rather than the office. Where do people on here like to get their suits? I really want a tweed suit but the prices are really putting me off. I work just off Jermyn Street and not far from Saville Row if anyone has any reccomendations.

just do a search for savile row bespoke, buy something close to your size and then get a decent tailor to fit it.

Very sensible idea but probably does not fit in with those who want to boast about the expensive tailors they buy their suits from.
Alternatively visit a factory buy a few yards of cloth and get a tailor to make a measured suit for you.
I am normally quite happy with debenhams or suits for you in the january sales.

It's not about how much it costs or labels, it's all about the construction and fit.
A debenhams suit is probably made in the same far-east factory as any Hugo Boss or even OZ by Ozwald Boateng (a line developed for Debenhams) and in the same manner, although probably using different fabrics. An inexpensive suit will invariably have a fused canvas (look on tb's link) and depending on the adhesive used, it will start to migrate from the jacket body after being caught in the rain or dry-cleaning. That's what happens when jackets "bubble".
Whereas a Savile Row bespoke will have a full floating canvas that helps the jacket body retain its shape and structure. You'll also never see maker's labels inside a Savile Row bespoke, apart from the tailor's label, sewn inside one of the pockets. My go-to Winter coat was made by Welsh & Jefferies the year before I was born and I doubt there's ever been a British Winter this coat could not survive.
Quality bespoke does not need a label, the label IS the garment itself. H Huntsman tweeds are woven in their own designs by the Isle of Islay mill (reputedly the oldest in Britain), in very short runs, many connoisseurs could tell you the year of manufacture, just by looking at the pattern.
If you want to keep a suit looking good, then don't wear it more than one day running, take it off and hang it on a shaped, wooden hanger, with the trousers suspended from the cuffs. Oh and never dry-clean it more than once a year, dry-cleaning is the quickest way to bollox up any fabric.

Do you want ready-to-wear, made-to-measure or bespoke?
Those are the three basic levels of fit.
Ready to wear is straight off the peg.
Made to measure is what it says, i.e. they take your measurements and you get a suit of those measurements.
Bespoke is even more fitted to you and the service will include fitting appointments to adjust the fit to be perfect. Saville Row bespoke will cost you a fortune. Stay away from Abercrombie and Fitch, the rest of the Row look down on them as rubbish.
For casual, I guess you might be wanting ready-to-wear.
Charles Tyrwhitt is just around the corner from you (Jermyn St) and their ready-to-wear are made the "right" way as Cod'ead describes, i.e. full floating canvas, working cuffs etc.
I suspect they are constructed abroad but probably worth a look .. depends if you like what they have and whether you like the fit.
They also sell online if you want to read about thier stuff (Suits are in their online sale at the moment).
I was at a wedding recently and there was a guy in a really sharp suit, very fitted but not too tight! (1960's style, very fashionable now, I'm told) and he got it from a tailor out Notting Hill way, Ladbroke Grove I think, under The Westway ... I'll see if I can get the name for you (as I fancy one myself !!).
EDIT - It's not Ladbroke Grove, it's Portobello Rd ... but under the Westway , this chap --> adamoflondon.com/home/

| Do you reckon a tailor could get a suit jacket to fit me properly in my wheelchair?
Every off-the-peg suit I've ever had looks stupid as the jacket never fits with me always being sat down.
Hmm.

Bookster make hacking jackets and tweed suits, good quality cloth but I haven't tried them so I don't know how good the construction is.

A bespoke tailor certainly could but it's gonna cost you, so look for something timeless rather than fashionable.
A first port of call I'd contact if I were you, is [url=http://www.hemingwaytailors.co.uk/mens-bespoke-tailoring.aspToby Luper of Hemingway[/url in Leeds. He comes from an old-established line of tailors and seems to have a good reputation. His bespoke stuff is sewn by [url=http://www.cheshirebespoke.com/Cheshire Bespoke[/url but he offshores his MtM garments.
What you need to know is that these established guys have probably done it all and more, many times over. Bespoke tailors usually have a uniform service and they will have tailored for the legless, armless and otherwise infirm. They know exactly how their garments will perform in any given situation. One of my pervading fears is to pick up a bespoke suit or jacket, only to find on closer inspection that either an arm or pants leg is three inches shorter than the other

| OK ... my turn with a question.
I have a Harris Tweed jacket (*) in a rather fetching shade of turquoisey-blue.
I bought it in a sample sale in the early 1990's (which proably explains why I've never seen another).
It has the boxy shoulders that were the fashion back then and, because I like the cloth so much, I'd like it remodelled.
I don't want to take it to somewhere that just does trouser shortening and such, so does anyone have any recommendations for alteration tailors who could do this, in the West Riding of God's Own County?
(*) Genuine Harris Tweed ... and Saville Row would call it a coat ... but it's a jacket

Thank you very much mate, appreciate that.
It'll be for my impending wedding in May 2013 so no mad rush just yet. I will be having a smart, timeless black suit though, along with my groomsmen.
Lovely stuff.

Sorry mate but I can lay claim to a master seamstress who was Savile Row trained. She works in our local Post Office and although she's no longer "in the trade", she does the odd guvvy job for a bottle or two of wine.

People always seem to speak highly of Kristoffers on Kirkstall Rd (opposite Iceland etc) whenever this question arises on southstander.com, and then there's that bespoke tailors opposite St Chads church ?

| If you are around the M62 corridor, The Suit Length Centre in Bradford carries a fantastic range of cloths complete with staff that would give The Fast Show a run for their money.
They can also put you in touch with a decent tailor.

I very much like the look of a mohair one from that Adam of London chap but I wouldn't have the nerve to buy on on line, might get a tab collar shirt though.

Yeah me too ... but being of the older and wrinklier persuasion I'm wondering if this mutton can dress as that lamb.
Going to have a think about a Booksters tweed suit though.
