Hull FC v Wigan Warriors Tetley's Super League VII Round 5
Friday 4th April. Kick Off 8:00pm at Kingston Communications Stadium

CherryandWhite.co.uk Match Report by Rebecca Smith

Troubled times ahead for Warriors.

Wigan face a major battle to improve ahead of next weekend's cup semi-final after slumping to their second successive defeat at the KC Stadium in Hull.

A second half try from Gareth Hock was all that the Warriors could manage against a Hull side whose kicking game put Wigan's to shame.

Hull's victory sent them to the top of the league table. In contrast Wigan languish in sixth position and will drop into the bottom half after this round of matches is completed.

It was the nature of the defeat rather than the defeat itself that will concern cherry and white fans as they turn their thoughts to next week's semi-final against Bradford.

It was not that Wigan lacked effort, in fact their defence was better than it was against London last week.

But they were devoid of attacking ideas, seemed without leadership and kicked appallingly. They were also incapable of converting any advantage which came their way.

Stuart Raper was philosophical : 'It's always disappointing to lose but I'm proud of the guys' efforts and I don't think the score line reflected the match.'

'I've got every faith in the guys. They'll stick together and get better.'

Andy Farrell, Mick Cassidy, Jamie Ainscough and Julian O'Neill all missed the game for a variety of reasons and although the young replacements showed great potential, the combined loss of experience took its toll.

Brett Dallas will definitely miss the semi-final after picking up a hamstring injury. Mark Smith and Stephen Wild are also in doubt with shoulder and ankle problems respectively.

A glimmer of hope came with Terry Newton's performance. He appeared after starting hooker Mark Smith went off injured and looked lively and provided greater urgency to the attack.

Two penalty goals in the first 35 minutes gave Hull a 4-0 lead and just before the break Jason Smith's precision cross field kick on the last tackle put winger Colin Best in for a try. Best out jumped Dallas, caught the ball on the second attempt and touched down.

An impressive touchline conversion from Prescott sent Hull into the plush dressing rooms 10-0 ahead.

Hull took just three minutes to score after the restart when Chris Chester's kick was pounced on by Adam Maher.

Gareth Hock darted down the left wing from dummy half to score a cheeky try but it was too little to late. Kirk Yeaman went over for Hulls third try on 70 minutes and Prescott added another penalty goal.

If the Challenge Cup holders are to have a hope of beating beefy Bradford in next week's semi-final Stuart Raper's team will have to improve their kicking game and seize their opportunities.
