Report:

Jungle Defeat

Two tries and a sending off in a dramatic last five minutes left Wigan licking their wounds at the jungle.

The Warriors were one-point ahead with just five minutes remaining thanks to a Julian O'Neill penalty goal in the 70th minute. But two last gasp tries tries from Darren Rogers and Waine Pryce - plus Paul Johnson's 78th minute dismissal - saw Castleford take victory.

Warriors coach Stuart Raper was furious at his team for the defeat. He said: '"We lost control of all the things we have worked on in the off season. Our ruck control was poor and our discipline was disappointing.' 'We had opportunities but we didn't finish off. We made four or five clear breaks we should have scored from but we didn't.'

Darren Rogers, possibly the most underrated three-quarter in Super League, had given the Tigers an early lead with his try after just four minutes, which Wayne Bartrim converted.

But penalties from Andy Farrell and Julian O'Neill cut the gap to two points by half-time.

Two more goals from O'Neill saw the Warriors take an 6-8 lead by the 55th minute of the tight game.

The lead changed again when Bartrim goaled and Danny Orr slotted over a drop goal.

But O'Neill's accurate kicking seemed to clinch the game when he put the Warriors ahead again with ten minutes to go.

Castelford though were not to be denied. Rogers went over for his second try and a last minute score from Waine Pryce sealed victory for the Tigers and left Wigan searching for their first points of Super League VIII.

A proud Graham Steadman was most pleased that his side had prevented the Challenge Cup holders from scoring a try. He said: 'It was a tremendous performance. I honestly believe we can compete with the best of them.

'It was very pleasing to prevent Wigan scoring a try because they have a lot of quality in their ranks.'
