Report:

Andy Farrell dragged himself off his sick bed to lead his side to victory over a passionate Castleford side in the knock-out Super League play-off series.

The injury ravaged Wigan side withstood a tremendous fight back from the Tigers to win the gripping game at the JJB Stadium.

Coach Stuart Raper explained that Farrell was suffering from flu like symptoms and had spent most of today and yesterday in bed. He was said to be shaking and shivering after the game and extremely pale.

Wigan booked themselves a Friday night date at the JJB with the in-form Leeds Rhinos. The winner of that game will earn the right to take on st Helens or Bradford away.

As in the previous nights play-off game between Leeds and Hull, the eventual losing side were by far the stronger in the opening minutes. But Castleford have not beaten the Warriors since their famous play-off triumph of 1999, when Stuart Raper was in charge.

The visitors did take a fourth-minute lead with a try from speedy winger Waine Pryce but excellent work from Adrian Lam and David Hodgson soon changed the score line to 12-4 in Wigan's favour.

Andy Farrell, back on kicking duty after his run of leg injuries was on the mark with both conversions.

In reflection of Wigan's horrendous season for injuries they were without Terry O'Connor, Brian Carney, Brett Dallas, Jamie Ainscough, Paul Johnson, Sean O'Loughlin and Mick Cassidy.

Castleford missed Mitch Healy who was forced to withdraw with a back injury, but they had their chances. Darren Rogers had a try disallowed by the video referee to the dismay of coach Graham Steadman.

Wigan extended their lead on 50 minutes with a fortunate move. Kris Radlinski stuck a leg out at an Adrian Lam pass and Danny Tickle touch down the ball in the in goal area.

Furner compounded the Tigers' misery by going over for the clinching try in the 70th minute.
