Wigan Warriors v Halifax Blue Sox - Tetley's Super League VI Round 15
Friday 15th June 2001. Kick Off 8:00pm at JJB Stadium

Match Report

Wigan destroyed the Blue Sox with Australian centre Steve Renouf claiming a hat-trick of tries.

The Warriors scored four early first-half tries in a 12-minute spree which did the damage and moved them to second spot in Super League.

Adrian Lam posted the opener after just six minutes with an easy run straight from the scrum.

Matthew Johns celebrated his return from injury by carving out the next two scores for fellow Australian David Furner and hooker Terry Newton.

Then Renouf skipped through for his first try of the match following a long Andy Farrell pass.

The Wigan skipper barged over for Wigan's fifth try on the half-hour before the Yorkshire side gained a crumb of comfort in the form of a reply from Gavin Clinch.

Australian half-back Andrew Dunemann unleashed a high bomb to the corner and the former Wigan scrum half won the race for the touchdown.

But Wigan hit back just four minutes later with Furner grabbing his second following another Johns pass.

Halifax were put under more pressure early in the second period.

They showed better resistance until David Hodgson collected a Lam kick to register a try against his former colleagues.

Farrell was on hand to again feed Renouf for the home side before the visitors' second rower Paul Davidson finished off a rare Blue Sox attack.

Renouf completed his hat-trick on 66 minutes to bring up the half-century mark for the Warriors.

Wigan did ease up late in the game, and Damian Gibson cashed in with a consolation try in the corner.

Farrell landed seven shots at goal for the hosts to pass the 1,000-goal career mark.
