Wigan Warriors v Warrington Wolves - Tetley's Super League V Round 19
Sunday 16th July 2000. Kick Off 7:05pm at JJB Stadium.

Match Report

Wigan's veteran second-row pair Denis Betts and Mick Cassidy produced some vintage rugby to keep the Warriors on the trail of the Super League leaders.

Seasoned Great Britain props Neil Cowie and Terry O'Connor also rolled back the years with some power-packed running to create the platform for Wigan's exciting threequarters to run in the tries that secured a precious victory.

After conceding 30 points to arch-rivals St Helens a week ago, coach Frank Endacott will be equally delighted with a return to form of his team's defence.

It was Cassidy, enjoying a deserved testimonial, who opened the scoring with a 19th-minute try, taking an inside pass from Willie Peters and forcing his way past three defenders to touch down.

That try, converted by Andy Farrell, was all that separated the sides until two tries in a three-minute spell just before the interval broke the resistance of Darryl Van de Velde's Wolves.

Teenage winger David Hodgson, who scored on his full debut in last week's breathtaking defeat by Saints, finished off a five-man handling move while centre Gary Connolly supported a magnificent break by Betts.

Wigan deserved their interval lead after dominating much of the half. Clean breaks by Steve Renouf and Peters ought to have brought more reward and they also had tries by Hodgson and Terry O'Connor disallowed.

Warrington also had a try from Steve McCurrie ruled out as referee Steve Presley showed a refreshing willingness to make decisions without recourse to video official John Holdsworth.

Presley looked to be spot on with his decision-making, although he opted to use modern technology before awarding Hodgson's try, which followed a superb break from winger Jason Robinson.

And it was the ever-dangerous Robinson who added to Wigan's try count less than a minute into the second half when he raced onto Newton's pass after Farrell and Renouf had made initial inroads into the Warrington defence.

Full-back Kris Radlinski, who pulled off tremendous tackles to halt Lee Penny and Jerome Guisset in full flight, then demonstrated his attacking skills to slice through some poor Wolves tackling and put Renouf over for a try that made it a full house for the Warriors threequarters.

But the visitors avoided a whitewash on 56 minutes when former Wigan utility player Mike Peters scored his first try for the club, touching down in the right-hand corner after the Wigan defence had been split by a 60-metre run from left winger Chris Campbell.

Cassidy and Warrington prop Andrew Gee were both sin-binned on 65 minutes after coming to blows and the visitors suffered another blow when forward Guisset was carried on in a neck brace after being hurt in a two-man tackle.
