The ill-fated Super League World Club Challenge series returned with Wigan hosting Hunter Mariners in a Quarter Final. Earlier in the day champions Bradford had been smashed 62-14 in Auckland but at least Wigan matched to compete in this game. An early Andy Farrell penalty put them 2-0 up but in the 9th Minute Scott Hill scored to put Hunter 4-2 up. A second penalty from Farrell levelled up at 4-4. Then in the 34th Minute, Wigan took the lead in bizarre fashion. Henry Paul had been taken out in midfield and every stopped and looked at the referee. But he called play on and Kris Radlinski picked up a loose ball to run away to the try line with no one chasing him. After video referee consolation, a try was given to put Wigan 10-4 up. Danny Ellison then scored early second half to make it 14-4 but Hunter quickly responded with a try from Nick Zisti to make it 14-8. Another Hunter try quickly followed by John Carlaw and within three minutes 14-4 had become 14-12. Wigan began to wilt from then on and in the 63rd Minute Nick Zisti scored a vital try that put Hunter ahead at 18-14. The game remained in the balance though until the 76th Minute when Richard Swain finished Wigan off with a score that made it 22-14. Danny Ellison though scored his second to leave Wigan with about a minute at the end but they couldn't find another try and Hunter hung on.
