Summary:

The fall out from Wigan's early cup exit had seen Eric Hughes replace Graeme West as coach with Shaun Edwards and Va'aiga Tuigamala eventually both leaving the club. This was on top of Martin Offiah, Scott Quinnell and Kelvin Skerrett having exited in late 1996 and this left a much younger Wigan squad kicking off 1997. Problems were brewing off the field also with news the club was in favour of selling Central Park to Tesco for £12million with Wigan temporarily moving to play at Bolton Wanderers new Reebok Stadium. This was seen as a snub to shareholders who in January had voted 7 to 1 to accept Dave Whelan's offer to buy Central Park and ground share there with Wigan Athletic. Fans were up in arms about this it all led to a dark cloud as Wigan began Super League 2 with the visit of Halifax to Central Park. You can imagine what the atmosphere was like as Martin Pearson and Fereti Tuilagi scored to give Halifax a 12-0 half time lead but Wigan rallied superbly second half. Tries from Paul Johnson, Danny Ellison and Gael Tallec put Wigan 14-12 up by the 62nd Minute but it looked like Halifax would win it when Asa Amone scored to make it 18-14. But with four minutes to go, an "irresistible break" by Andy Farrell set up Andy Johnson and Faz then converted to snatch the victory.
