This Cup Final at Headingley was brought forward a week
to allow Huddersfield's test tourists to take part before them departed for
the long boat trip to Australia. A crowd of up to 35,000 had been planned
for for at Headingley but rain had been driving down all day and just 22,000
ended up making the final in the end. Huddersfield had scraped past
Wakefield in Round 2 and then needed a replay to see off St Helens
Recreation in the Quarter Finals but nethertheless they were top of the
league table and a huge challenge for Wigan.
Wigan had taken the lead, after being awarded a try for
obstruction, but Huddersfield stepped up the pace with Rogers, Wagstaff and
Pogson all getting a touch in a long break down field before Clark finished
off the move with the try. Conversion made it 5-5 and before half time
Huddersfield went 8-5 up with a try from Pogson that went unconverted.
Wigan started the second half under the pump but somehow
managed to break out and re-take the lead. Ernie Shaw found a break and the
supporting Syd Jerram finished the move with a try that made it 10-8 after
Jolley converted. Huddersfield though finished far stronger and score three
tries from Habron, Todd and Pogson again to complete a 21-10 success.
