Summary:l

Wigan had five new debutants in their team for this opening match of the 1898-1899 season including Bottomley (from Huddersfield), Ball (from Standish South End), Kavanagh (from Cardiff St Pauls), Highton (promoted from the "A" team) and Hilton (a local man from Marsh Green). Neither side scored before the interval and it was Runcorn who took the lead with a drop goal from Jolley making it 2-0. He added a second for 4-0 later but Wigan scored a try from Jack Blackburn for 4-3 and the conversion would have won them the match, but Harry Ball missed and the game was lost.
