Castleford did really well to get this tie on as it was the only cup tie of the weekend to defeat the cold weather. 13 tonnes of straw had helped keep several inches of snow off the pitch but conditions were heavy. Wigan started the better but had a try disallowed when Eric Ashton sent Keri Jones over but it was brought back for a foot in touch. Wigan did eventually go ahead though with Peter Rowe sending Bill Francis over for 5-0. That score was heading towards half time but Castleford sucker punched Wigan in the last five minutes of the half. First Hepworth kicked a drop goal before Hardisty, playing for the first time since Boxing Day, got Ward over for 5-5 at the interval. Cas kicked a penalty to go 7-5 early second half but Hardisty was involved again to intercept Wigan and race 75 yards for a try converted by Redfearn that got Castleford into a 12-5 lead. Only 13 minutes remained and although Wigan got a try back by Francis it turned out to be just consolation.
