This was the first time that Central Park hosted the
Christmas Derby Fixture. Previously all Boxing Day clashes had been at Knowsley Road with
Central Park hosting the Good Friday Match. But the clashes alternated
venues from this year onwards. Eric Ashton had kicked three penalty goals
for Wigan in the first 25 minutes for a 6-0 lead that was held until half
time. That was added to with another penalty early in the second half and
that proved to be that. Saints hopes finally being dashed when they lost
Duggie Greenall to a leg injury.
