Both sides were fighting hard to get into the "Top 4" play offs and Wigan earned a crucial victory here to end a six match derby winning streak that St Helens held. The two clubs were level on 49 points afterwards in 4th and 5th place in the table but it turned out in the end that neither side would make the play offs, Wigan missing out on scoring average.
