Saints extended their derby winning streak to six matches
with this comfortable Boxing Day win over Wigan. The tone was set with tries
from Duggie Greenall and Eric Ledger putting Saints into a 10-0 lead inside
just four minutes after Joe Ball converted both efforts. Wigan recovered
from that shock but Jack Cunliffe's failure with three penalty goal attempts
still left them trailing. Joe Ball then kicked a penalty for 12-0 before
Cunliffe finally was successful with one for 12-2. Further penalty goals
from first Ball then Don Platt made it 14-4 but it was tries that Wigan
needed not goals. They finally got one when Jack Broome scored from seventy
metres but goal kicking let them down again with the score only being 14-7.
That proved to be the end of the scoring except for a converted try by
Ledger with three minutes to go.
