Bradford Northern v Wigan (1st Place v 2nd Place) - 1951-1952 Championship Final.
Saturday 10th May 1952. Kick Off 3:00pm at Leeds Road, Huddersfield.

Match Report

The Grand End to the League Season but it was "strangely lacking in excitement" according to one newspaper. Wigan started the better side in the opening 15 minutes with Jack Large going close to scoring twice and one try being chalked off because Jackie Cunliffe was offside.

So Wigan had wasted chances and it was Bradford who took a 2-0 lead with Joe Phillips kicking a 20th Minute penalty for Wigan being offside at the play the ball.

Wigan would soon respond five minutes later. After Ken Traill had been penalised for holding down Brian Nordgren, Wigan soon scored with a "fine burst" from Nat Silcock getting him over. Ken Gee kicked the conversion for 5-2.

Bradford would kick a second penalty before half time with Johnny Alty penalised at the scrum. 5-4 to Wigan at the interval.

Twelve minutes into the second half, Bradford got the lead back with Alty again penalised and Phillips kicking for 6-5. Wigan were soon back on the attack but Bradford hung on to their lead for ten minutes with Gee missing a penalty and good attack from Alty seeing both Nordgren and Jack Large held out short.

It was looking like Wigan scoring was inevitable though and just after the hour, Gee kicked a penalty which put Wigan back ahead 7-6.

The match was still tight but Wigan had a wet sail and on 68 minutes, Cunliffe scored a great individual try to make it 10-6. Bradford still had hope but never looked close to scoring and Wigan sealed their eight league title with good work from Alty getting Martin Ryan over for a last minute try that completed the 13-6 success.
