This was a very tight Lancashire Cup Semi Final throughout at Knowsley Road. Only penalty goals had been scored in the first half, for a 4-2 Wigan lead, before Don Gullick sent Steve Llewellyn over for a try that put them 5-4 ahead at half time. Wigan then found a try early in the second half from Ronnie Mather that made it 9-5 after Ken Gee converted. That slender lead was sweated on for the rest of the game but Saints only reply came towards the end with a penalty goal from Viv Harrison making it 9-7. Wigan survived a late scare when Eric Hesketh almost scored but hung on to make their sixth Lancashire Cup Final in a row.
