Wigan v Huddersfield (1st Place v 2nd Place) - 1949-1950 Championship Final.
Saturday 13th May 1950. Kick Off 3:00pm at Maine Road, Manchester.

Report

This was a remarkable success for Wigan with eight first team regulars absent. Ernie Ashcroft, Tommy Bradshaw, Jackie Cunliffe, Joe Egan, Ken Gee, Jack Hilton, Gordon Ratcliffe and Martin Ryan were all on the boat sailing to Australia and New Zealand for Great Britain's tour. That was how they travelled pre air flying and tourists often missed the end and start of seasons.

Huddersfield themselves had Dave Valentine (for whom the Under 19s man of the match is named in his honour) and James Bowden but for Wigan to win this game so handsomely was still a big shock. It was not expected given Wigan's absentee list.

Wigan took the lead quickly when Cec Mountford threw a looping pass over two defenders to send Nat Silcock over for a third minute try in the right corner. Ted Ward converted for 5-0. The second try came on 15 minutes when Brian Nordgren intercepted Jeff Bawden for a 10-0 score after Ward again converted.

The only reply to that quick start was a penalty goal from Bawden by Huddersfield just after half time but it was only the 68th Minute when Wigan sealed the title. The third try came with Jack Broome going on a "outward swerving run" before dummying to get over. Ward converted for 15-3 with 12 minutes left and Huddersfield had no hope.

Wigan glossed the performance with Ted Slevin getting Billy Blan over for the fourth try and Ward kept up a great afternoon's kicking with a fourth conversion for 20-2.

The win sealed Wigan's seventh title success, keeping up their record of having been champions the most. One newspaper reflected that only Wigan of modern sides could achieve such a triumph with so many top players absent. It was an superb accomplishment.
