Wigan's cup defence came to an end in a tight cup tie
away at Barrow. No sign of that coming first half when Wigan had built up a
7-0 lead. It probably should have been double that though and whilst Barrow
still had hope, they took advantage in the second half with the light wind
and sun at their backs. A "shocking error" by Johnny Alty was eventually
converted into a try by Lewthwaite for 7-3 and later he added a second try
for 7-6. Conversion failures still had Wigan ahead as the game progressed
into the final quarter but with six minutes to go, Barrow got a penalty shot
to take the lead. Fourty yards out and fifteen from touch, this was no easy
kick but it Horne managed to get it to put Barrow 8-7 ahead. He then
frustrated Wigan in the final moments with some deep kicks that kept them
well away from the try line. The home supporter were in raptures as the
final whistle was sounded by referee Mr Coates of Pudsey.
