This match proved to be a full on sweat for Wigan who did
enough to earn what they thought would be a replay. Leigh had led 4-2 at the
break (16-13 aggregate) but Gordon Ratcliffe managed to find a try to level
the contest on aggregate at 16-16. During the last eight minutes four
penalty goal attempts were made but that deadlock couldn't be broken. In
fact Ted Ward missed six goals throughout the match. So the tie finished
level and a replay was set to be played at the neutral venue at Swinton.
However it later came to light that the referee should have played extra
time rather than called full time. On the follwoing Monday the "Rugby League Cup Committee"
decided that rather than playing a replay, this match would be
declared entirely null and void and it was ordered that the second leg would
be replayed in full instead with the score of the tie reverting to the 12-11
lead Leigh had after the first leg. Thus because of the referee's mistake,
this second leg was replayed a week later.
