Warrington had lost their 100% league record to Workington the Saturday before and now beat Wigan who had beaten them in the Lancashire Cup Final earlier in the season. A fortunate try by Ted Ward helped Wigan lead 3-2 at half time. Warrington came out strong though second half but despite plenty effort, they could only go 4-3 in front with a drop goal from Pimblett. Joe Egan then missed a drop goal by inches to put Wigan back ahead but it needn't have mattered. From the resulting drop out, combination between Jackie Cunliffe, Gordon Ratcliffe and Frank Barton saw Ernie Ashcroft burst onto a pass and he won the race with Jones to the try line. Ted Ward converted to make it 8-4 and that proved to be that, even though Ces Mountford retired hurt late in the game. He had done his job earlier though, playing a huge part in this victory. A week ago Warrington had kicked off six points clear at the top, now that lead was down to just two points.
