Wigan v Warrington - 1948-49 Lancashire Cup Final.
Saturday 13th November 1948. Kick Off 3:00pm at Station Road, Swinton.

Match Report

This was a Lancashire Cup Semi Final between the current top two in the league table. In fact Warrington were on a run of 23 victories in a row and such was the anticipation, a competition record 39,015 turned out to Swinton for the clash. Unfortunately their view was heavily restricted by a thick mist over the ground. with the pitch being wet and heavy also.

Warrington had the games first chance Helme breaking through but Ces Mountford hunted him down. Wigan soon responded with good work from Martin Ryan eventually seeing passing right to see Gordon Ratcliffe score and round nearer the posts for Ted Ward to convert easier for a 5-0 lead.

Palin kicked a penalty to reduce the lead to 5-2 but Wigan would soon claim a second try. Ernie Ashcroft sent Ted Ward over and he converted his own try for a 10-2 lead. He then added a penalty soon after for 12-2. Warrington though had hope when Johnson scored a minute before half time to make it 12-5.

Ward kicked an early second half penalty for 14-5 but Warrington would soon begin to fight back with full furore and Bevan would score to make it 14-8. Missed conversion kept them two scores down though and they never managed another score to make Wigan sweat. In fact Wigan went closer with Johnny Alty being just short. The match was seen out and Wigan had sealed their 10th Lancashire Cup success.
