It had been a long race between Wigan and Warrington over which of the two would lose for the first time since Christmas and it just so happened they would both fall to the defeat on this same afternoon. Their were extenuating circumstances though with a France v England international in Marseille robbing them both of test players. Wigan were particular hammered with the services of Martin Ryan, Gordon Ratcliffe, Ernie Ashcroft, Tommy Bradshaw, Ken Gee, Joe Egan and Les White being absent in the England team. Jack Hilton was also still injured from the previous weekends Cup Semi Final against Rochdale. Warrington though had drawn level with Wigan at the top after beating Dewsbury in the midweek prior to this Saturday, although Wigan now held a game in hand and remained top on points average.
