Summary:l |
This was an exciting Lancashire Cup Tie in which Wigan
had to fight back to earn progression. Saints took the lead with a penalty
goal from Jimmy Stott before Albert Doyle won a race to a kick with Martin
Ryan to score a try that made it 7-0 after Stott converted. Wigan's only
first half response came just before half time with a penalty goal from Ted
Ward making it 7-2 at the break. Wigan got a gift try to further bring that
deficit when a poor pass from Walter Norris towards Jim Myers for Saints was
intercepted and returned for a try by Ernie Ashcroft. That should have been
7-7 with a simple conversion for Ward but he somehow managed to miss it, so
the Saints still held a slender 7-5 advantage. That was looking a costly
miss but Wigan found a winning try from Gordon Ratcliffe although Saints
complained heavily that Jimmy Stott had been obstructed. Despite the missed
conversion the 8-7 lead proved to be enough. |
