Wigan v Dewsbury - 1946-1947 Rugby League Championship Final.
Saturday 21st June 1947. Kick Off 3:00pm at Maine Road, Manchester.

Match Report

Wigan were looking to complete back to back title successes in this Championship Final but Wigan had to recover from a poor first half. Dewsbury kicked an early drop goal to lead 2-0 after just four minutes and that carried all the way to the break.

Johnny Lawrenson had gone close to scoring before the break though with the touchline beating him and that was a hint of what was to come second half. It took just two minutes for Wigan to score with Ted Ward charging down Jimmy Ledgard into a mistake before gathering the ball and sending Brian Nordgren over in the corner. Ward's conversion went over despite hitting the post.

The 5-2 lead for Wigan held for a while but two quick back to back tries either side of hour took Wigan to victory. The first saw Ces Mountford and Ward combine in midfield to break before Mountford sent Lawrenson over for 8-2.

Conversion missed but quickly Wigan scored again with Tommy Bradshaw going on a run down the blind side before drawing a one-two with Lawrenson saw him retake the ball to score himself. Ward converted that time for 13-2.

It looked like the score would end up a repeat of the 1929 Challenge Cup Final between the sides when Ward missed an opportunity to extend Wigan's lead. But Dewsbury kicked a forlorn and desperate drop goal with four minutes to go which ended the scoring at 13-4. The match was described as "much closer than the scoreline suggests" but Wigan had completed their sixth championship.
