Wigan had beaten Wakefield comfortably at Central Park
just three days earlier but the quick return match at Belle Vue saw them
come unstuck. Already hindered by Martin Ryan, Ernie Ashcroft, Tommy
Bradshaw, Ken Gee and Joe Egan playing for Lancashire against Cumberland at
Barrow on the same afternoon, Wigan also lost Gordon Ratcliffe to injury
just before half time. Despite being down to 12 men, Wigan held a 7-5 lead
late in the game but a try from Wakefield saw them snatch victory. Wigan
remained top of the table though because Widnes lost 3-2 at Featherstone but
Bradford made it now a three team lead at the top after they dispatched
Castleford 22-5 at Odsal.
