Wigan had hammered Belle Vue 68-0 just seven days earlier
in the league but thankfully the 21,648 crowd for this Lancashire Cup Final
saw a keener fought contest this time. Perhaps too keen at times with the
match being more about brute force and niggly tactics adopted by Belle Vue
in particular would frustrate Wigan. These tactics gave Johnny Lawrenson the
chance to dispatch three easy penalty goals that proved the difference with
both sides having scored an converted try each during the match. Wigan had
now won their eight Lancashire Cup with this success.
