Wigan were back in Oldham after the sides had met in the
league on Saturday. This time a place in the Lancashire Cup Final was at
stake. Oldham started strongly but blew opportunities to perhaps be as much
as 10-0 up in 15 minutes. Wigan though saw off that pressure and took the
lead themselves with a converted try from Ernie Aschroft under the posts.
Oldham's Griffiths responded with a penalty goal. That made it 5-2 to Wigan
on the half hour when it looked like they'd literally suffered a bad blow.
Ces Mountford was concussed and left dazed for the rest of the match. He
"refused to retire" but did have to switch to centre with Ashcroft moving to
Stand Off. Ashcroft would struggle in that position but no sooner as
Oldham's luck looked in, it was soon lost. In preventing Gordon Ratcliffe
scoring a try right on half time with a head on tackle, Oldham's Griffiths'
suffered a serious cut that saw him retire from the match. So Oldham had the
whole second half with just twelve men and Wigan took advantage of this to
find tries from Johnny Lawrenson, Brian Nordgren and Ratcliffe on top of a
second for Ashcroft seeing Wigan into a second Lancashire Cup Final in a
