Wigan's defence of their League Title began with a trip
to play Broughton, who were playing for the first time under their new guise
of Belle Vue Rangers at the Greyhound Stadium in Manchester. They were still
without their test tourists who had missed the back end of the previous
season but were able to welcome back Johnny Lawrenson, who had missed the
1945/46 season and also had new signing Ces Mountford in at Stand Off. Tries
from Stan Jolley and Gordon Ratcliffe, both converted by Lawrenson, helped
Wigan score ten points in the first half but Belle Vue kept in touch with
three penalty goals for 10-6 at the break. Lawrenson made it 12-6 with a
penalty early second half but Wigan were left sweating to the end after a
try from McComas, converted by Thomas, made it 12-11. Wigan hung on despite
Lawrenson hitting the bar with a late penalty.
