Wigan had lost the Lancashire Cup and Challenge Cup Final
in this first post war season so this was a chance to redeem themselves in
the Championship Final against Huddersfield at Maine Road in Manchester. For
the first half hour, Huddersfield were the better team. They dominated the
scrummages but only had a penalty goal from Bawden to show for it. Brian
Nordgren had kicked a penalty for Wigan before a try from Ernie Ashcroft had
Wigan 5-2 up by the break.
Bawden kicked a second penalty to make it 5-4 after half
time but a second try for Cunliffe put Wigan 8-4 up and they never looked
back from that. Later Jackie Cunliffe scored to seal it with Nordgren
converting to complete a 13-4 success which completed Wigan's fifth league
