In this Challenge Cup Semi Final at Swinton, Ted Ward kicked Wigan 2-0 ahead with a 5th Minute penalty before that lead became 7-0 with his conversion to a try by Stan Jolley that was set up by a "great burst" by Ernie Ashcroft. Widnes reduced the lead before half time to 7-2 with a goal from Colin Hutton but in the 44th Minute, Ashcroft was again causing problems and scored a try himself this time, Ward converting for 12-2. Peter Reynolds try reduced the lead to 12-5 but the damage was done. 37,000 attended with £4,375 made on the gate.
