Documentary exploring the life
and work of the TV sports pundit, who aspired to take the game of rugby
league beyond
its heartland in the north of England. The programme explores
why he proved such a divisive figure during his career,
attracting praise
for his warm character, but receiving criticism from those who considered
him a harmful northern caricature.
Includes contributions by historian Tony
Collins, who argues that the current Super League owes a debt of gratitude
to Waring,
who he claims provided the inspiration for the many
attractions that have transformed league match-days into family events. |

originally filmed in 1969, capturing the spirit and history of rugby league
in the north of England.
Director Roger Mills details how the sport enhanced
lives both on and off the pitch, and explains the difficult relationship
it
shares with rugby union. He also asks broadcaster Brian Redhead why he
believes rugby league is an intellectual game,
and provides coverage of life
behind the scenes at Featherstone Rovers - where most of the players worked
together
at the local coal mine. |

between Leeds and St Helens at Wembley Stadium, regarded as one of the
greatest finals
in the history of the tournament, and one in which Leeds
were aiming to lift the trophy for a second successive year.

Director Lindsay Anderson's
first feature film is his best, giving Richard Harris and Rachel Roberts the
roles of their lives.
Harris stars as the miner who becomes a ruthless
professional rugby player; Roberts plays the repressed, widowed landlady
with whom he can only communicate through violence. Adapted from David
Storey's novel, it includes some remarkable
scenes of confrontation - one
particular quarrel between the two is painfully honest - and the northern
town where it all takes
place is as evocatively depicted as the setting of
that other kitchen-sink classic Saturday Night and Sunday Morning
(which
producer Karel Reisz directed). This numbers among the early ripples of the
British New Wave and it still hits hard.
