Match Report

When you win eight matches in a row you can put the attacking woes to the back of your mind but here against St Helens they became exposed in full woeful indignity.

The first fifteen minutes of the second half was non stop Wigan attack but our style seems to be akin to going into battle against machine gun fire with just a spoon for a weapon. Turgid, rancid, horrible stuff.

If we win the semi final next week I won't be worried one jot about this one but it has set massive alarm bells ringing.

I'm not convinced Sam Tomkins was fit and I feel some of our pack was still finding some match fitness compared to Saints who've been pretty set fair for a few weeks but saying that, the pack wasn't the problem. It was the creativity and we had nothing apart from grubbering through in desperate hope. Matty Smith was pretty anonymous and you can't afford that in big games.

Saints meanwhile were excellent. Had a lot of fight and desire and looked like a side that were aiming up this game for a big performance. You should expect that in a derby but I'm still adamant that the bigger game for Wigan is next week.

I didn't think Saints were twelve points better than Wigan at half time to be honest but a dreadful error on half way by Dan Sarginson followed by a bit of luck in Saints getting away with having no one at the play the ball turned the tide and in a blink it was 16-4 at the break.

Wigan had scored a nice try with Lewis Tierney touching down a George Williams grubber to the left corner but two penalties either side of that by Mark Percival made it 4-4. Then the two tries, first for Percival then Morgan Knowles, had the visitors 16-4 by the break.

Second half saw Wigan getting numerous chances to hit back but the crapness of Wigan's attack was obvious and Saints were able to practically shut up shop. I reckon at least seven attempts at the line were thwarted. Good defence perhaps but I thought the gaps were there for Wigan to expose but I don't think they'd have spotted a skyscraper in New York the way this was going.

Saints glossed their performance with a late drop goal from Luke Walsh and a nice try from James Roby for a final score of 23-4. Their was also a late bit of drama between Frank-Paul Nuuausala and Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook but it was like a toddler version of Neil Cowie and Adam Fogerty all those years ago. The biff is dead and Wigan's attack is on life support! I'd say I hope for better next week but it's hard to be any worse!
