Match Report

After the hammering Saints got off Sydney Roosters I was expected far better from Wigan. Sadly they went down by an even worse scoreline in a repeat of last years World Series match that was only decided in extra time.

Wigan competed well for territory but did not have enough class to score tries when it mattered whilst Brisbane literally picked off Wigan at every opportunity they got.

Shaun Wane's team started well but didn't find an early score to settle them down and Brisbane up the other end scored the first try on 9 minutes with Corey Oates getting over in the left corner and Corey Parker converting for 6-0.

Then on 16 minutes came a huge blow to Wigan with Micky McIlorum suffering an injury and it was obvious to all that it was a major one. It's proven to be a possible season ending ankle injury but that opened an opportunity for Sam Powell and I thought he put in a good effort here after he came on.

Within a minute of that injury though Brisbane doubled their lead with a try from Kodi Nikorima and it began to feel like Wigan were hanging in. Early on we had dominated the ruck to stifle Brisbane but we couldn't keep that intensity up and it was them now finding easy metres around the ruck area.

Wigan though would hit back next with a lovely pass from Liam Farrell getting Dan Sarginson over but tries from Matt Gillett and Jarrod Wallace in the ten minutes up to half time had the visitors in a commanding 24-6 lead.

A comeback was never likely and two tries in quick succession from Oates and Nikorima now had Brisbane up 36-6 with still over 20 minutes to play.

You really feared the score racking up heavily, even so much to threaten Wigan's record defeat at DW Stadium but Brisbane only added a further six pointer when Greg Eden broke the length of the field from a scrum.

Wigan at least had the last say in the match with a consolation from George Williams but it was a humbling match all together.

In saying that though, I'd still argue we showed more here at times than we did in winning the two Super League games so far this year. Powell like I said went well and I thought Taulima Tautai had a great match also. Our lack of creativity when it comes to getting over the try line is worrying though so far this year. Where is the spark? I hope to see it ignite against Salford.
