Can't say I'm too disappointed with this loss. I said before it was
a free pass for Wigan and frankly they weren't given much help with
rotten luck first half.
A "No Try" on the field for Danny McGuire overturned by the video officials. A knock on by Kevin Sinfield ahead of the second try before his clear knock on that was disgracefully given for the third try.
Don't get me wrong. I can see why the first try was overturned and how that knock on for the second try could be missed but when the third incident occurred it was a huge kick in the teeth with not having that luck before.
Generally though despite all that, which clearly didn't help our cause, I felt overall Leeds were just more clinical than us. I thought we gave plenty of effort but between the 6th and 58th Minutes we didn't score any tries.
We had the territory but whilst their was some superb defence by Leeds, I do wonder if Ryan Sutton should of scored on at least one of his two excellent bursts towards the line? Was he guilty of not going low enough? I'm only going off my memories from at the time but I couldn't believe he didn't get over on that second burst.
I felt we were a bit predictable also in testing Tom Briscoe on the last tackle. It worked early on but they fixed that hole and we perhaps lacked a plan B? Going right was failing a lot during that spell also. Add in sloppy passes going to ground behind players and three really poor conceded penalties, two by Sean O'Loughlin and one by Joel Tomkins, and I feel that even if we did suffer rotten luck, we still didn't do our own things right.
Add in the missed goal kicks and a rotten kick by Liam Farrell at 20-8 that soon went punished up the other end it all added to Wigan's downfall. To top it off we lost Micky Mac injured at a crucial time and Dom Crosby and Taulima Tautai pulled up injured the day before the game. All in all it really wasn't Wigan's night luck wise.
To be fair it was a good rally late on but too late to really test what I thought was a tiring Leeds effort. They rightly sit four points clear top of the table though. That is a fair reflection of this season. For us, when Saints losing was a big result. If we finish second in the table we get a home semi final like Leeds will do. That has to be the aim now and it's in our hands.
One final thing. Are we seeing enough with ball in hand from Matty Smith? George Williams is showing some great effort but it's all individual. Our halves don't seem to combine as a pair and that isn't helping us I don't think. Let's us see what next week brings.
