Current Champions Salford had continued this season where they had left off the previous with 14 victories out of 16 matches so far in the campaign, to lead the table. Their only defeats had come with weakened sides, due to test call ups, when playing away at Wakefield and London Highfield. Salford had also beaten Wigan each of the last four times the sides had met, so this was quite a scalp victory for the home side.
