Wigan were aiming to complete a league and cup double here after winning the Challenge Cup against Oldham, but alas they ended up losing this hard fought final against Batley. Press reports point the finger at Wigan's pack being disappointing against "lighter" opponents. Murray opened the scoring for Batley for a 3-0 lead. Wigan's only response was a Sol Oakley penalty goal which made the score 3-2 at half time. Batley then took control early second half with a try from Leeming, scored after Oakley failed to deal with a cross field kick. Murray soon scored again and a conversion by H.Rees put Batley into a 13-2 lead. Wigan switched on after that but it turned out to be too late for them to win the game. During their rally, Tommy Parker sent Dick Armstrong over for a try, that after Oakley converted had brought the deficit down to 13-7. Wigan still had time to not give up hope but it all dashed when Jerry Shea took the wrong option when Armstrong looked in good support to claim a second try. Time ran out on Wigan with Batley being unlucky not to score again in the last minute.
