A break from League action with the start of the Lancashire Cup competition that Wigan had won the previous season. Wigan had new South African signing Attie van Heerden making his debut on the wing but it was Broughton who took the lead with a try from Bentham before two penalty goals from Jim Sullivan put Wigan 4-3 ahead. Lomas then restored the lead for Broughton but Tommy Howley's try put Wigan back in front 7-6 before half time. It was still tight second half but a further penalty goal from Sullivan and a drop goal (worth two points) from Tommy Howley edged Wigan over the line.
