Wigan Warriors v St Helens- Tetley's Super League VI Final Elimination Play Off
Friday 6th October 2001. Kick Off 8:00pm at JJB Stadium

Match Report

Wigan will play Bradford in Super League's Grand Final after ending the dreams of defending champions St Helens.

The Warriors, who lost to the Bulls last week, ran in seven tries in their one-sided victory at the JJB Stadium.

Saints tried their best to rally after going behind to an Adrian Lam try on 10 minutes and briefly levelled when Kevin Iro crossed over.

But another Lam score and a brace of tries from Brian Carney, plus one each for Kris Radlinksi, Terry Newton and Matthew Johns, gave the game to Wigan.

Warriors skipper Andy Farrell was in great form with the boot, kicking eight goals from nine attempts to break Frano Botica's club record of 423 points in a season.

Saints' other points came from Great Britain international Paul Sculthorpe, who added a try to his earlier conversion.

Wigan coach Stuart Raper was delighted with the performance of his players.

"We found the hunger and the desire, and we used our heads," said the Australian.

"St Helens are a great side - and deservedly so - but we showed that there's going to be a new era."

Wigan and Bradford will meet next Saturday in the Grand Final, which takes place at Old Trafford in Manchester.
