Match Report from www.theboltonnews.co.uk

What an amazing transformation in less than a month.

The Silk Cut holders St Helens were humiliated by their biggest ever defeat at Knowsley Road by an awesone Wigan side that produced a breathtaking display.

The Warriors were simply magnificent, while a dejected and injury-hit St Helens never recovered from an appalling start which saw them 13 points down in the opening 10 minutes.

Saints had several players in action who were clearly not 100 per cent fit, but nothing can detract from the Warriors' wonderful display.

Andrew Farrell deservedly took the man of the match award for as complete a performance as you could wish to see, while Jason Robinson, who grabbed a hat-trick, and Yorkshireman Tony Smith were not far behind.

The midfield triangle of Smith, Farrell and Nigel Wright has really clicked, but never as convincingly as last night.

Farrell was the architect of nearly every try, while Smith's speed and probing always had the home side on the back foot. Combine that with a cast iron defence and Saints were left stunned as their arch-rivals ran amok.

Skipper Farrell didn't think before the game Wigan would get 60 points but was confident of success.

"We have trained well all week and the atmosphere has been good. We were buzzing before the game and were in the right mood.

"When you have the players of Smith and Wright's quality it makes it easy to play well. It was one of the best team performances I have been associated with."

For coach Eric Hughes, who was sacked last year by St Helens, the manner of victory was particularly pleasing.

"I have been in the game a long time and there are a lot of highs and lows but tonight gave me a lot of personal satisfaction.

"One of the reasons banded about why I was sacked was that I couldn't coach on defence. But this was a major victory for the club not the coach.

"We were strong in all departments - not only in attack but we showed tremendous pride in defence."

Wigan had a dream start with Robinson scorching away in the opening minute to score followed by Smith breaking the line five minutes later. Farrell added both goals and a drop goal before Robinson grabbed a second in the 17th minute.

The Warriors were marching to glory and nothing was going to stop them as tries came thick and fast through Smith again, Farrell and Andy Johbnson. Farrell added another four goals to put the visitors ahead 37-0 at the break.

After the interval Robinson grabbed his hat-trick, while Haughton added to his growing tally with two touchdowns. Gary Connolly grabbed one against his old club and Kris Radlinski wound up the try scoring. Farrell landed another four goals. Saints had little consolation with tries by Andy Leathem and Anthony Sullivan with Bobbie Goulding adding two conversions.

Their fourth successive win lifts Wigan above Saints in the table and they now entertain Paris on Friday night looking for another victory to set them nicely on their way as they leave on Saturday for three games in Australia.
