Summary:l

Wigan were aiming for their sixth Challenge Cup success in a row against Widnes in this 1993 Final at Wembley. The Chemics started superbly to take a lead in the 7th Minute when Bobbie Goulding's pass got Richie Eyres over towards the left corner after some poor tackling by both Jason Robinson and Frano Botica. Jonathan Davies converted to put them 6-0 up. With quickly responded with Robinson being held up over the line in the 11th Minute before Kelvin Skerrett beat a poor tackle attempt by Darren Wright to score and it was 6-6 after Botica converted.

Widnes quickly went back ahead with Kurt Sorensen beating more back tackling by Botica to crash over to the right of the posts. Davies again converted for a 12-6 Widnes lead after 17 minutes. That lead held for 6 minutes when Wigan got a try back again. This time it looked like a possibly high shot by Martin Offiah and that caused John Devereux to lose the ball. Referee Russell Smith called play on (no video ref in 1993) and Offiah slipped Dean Bell in for the try. Botica converted for 12-12. No further try scoring occurred in the last 15 minutes of the first half but near to half time, Botica added a penalty goal to put Wigan 14-12 ahead.

Wigan then extended their lead quickly second half with a try after two minutes. Andrew Farrars' offload on half way got Denis Betts beating some weak tackling with only an ankle tap stopping him scoring. Widnes never recovered and Dean Bell's superb pass got Sam Panapa under the posts, easy conversion for Botica making it 20-12. A 47th Minute penalty from Jonathan Davies quickly brought that lead back down to a one score lead.

Amazingly, no further scoring occurred in the final half hour with both sides wilting on a hot day. But their was still drama to come when Richie Eyres became only the second player to sent off in a Wembley Rugby League Final. He joined Syd Hynes (Leeds 1971) in being red carded after a vicious elbow on Martin Offiah, which saw Eyres get a six match ban afterwards.
