Wigan took the lead when Denis Betts and Sam Panapa combined to get Shaun Edwards over in the 21st Minute. Then Wigan struck close on half time with Phil Clarke scored for a 12-0 lead. Widnes had new signing Julian O'Neill in a centre who had played for Brisbane in the World Club Challenge at Central Park two weeks earlier. He helped set up a try for David Hulme to make it 12-6 but Denis Betts' try sealed the game and sent Wigan top of the table.
