Summary:

Wigan had sweated in the original tie on the Saturday but made no mistake in this midweek replay at Knowsley Road. Many fans had been locked out the ground such was the anticipation and boiling point burst in the opening couple of minutes with a brawl seeing Kelvin Skerrett and Martin Hall sin binned for Wigan and Bobbie Goulding for Saints. Steve Prescott kicked Saints into a 2-0 lead with a penalty but Jason Robinson's 11th Minute try put Wigan 6-2 ahead. Botica increased that to 8-2 but a try from Goulding under the posts made it 8-8 by the 25th Minute. The tie was looking set to be another thrilling but a white hot spell from Wigan would end up killing it dead. They scored four tries in the 12 minutes up to Half Time to take the score from 8-8 to 32-8. Martin Offiah (2), Gary Connolly and Phil Clarke all scored with Botica converting the lot. Saints scored the first try of the second half through Sonny Nickle but Martin Offiah's hat-trick try on 53 Minutes ended any hopes of a comeback at 36-14. Saints still fought with tries from Chris Joynt and Ian Pickavance making it 36-24 with seven minutes remaining but Wigan got the last try from Jason Robinson with four minutes to go.
