Summary:l

Wigan were aiming to set a new record for most consecutive wins to start a league season but they failed to make it 14 out of 14 with this loss to second placed Leeds. Wigan knew they were travelling to London to receive the "Team of the Year" award at the BBC Sports Personality Awards and perhaps Leeds caught them cold late in the match as Wigan's 28-23 lead became a 33-28 Leeds victory. From 16-12 up at Half Time, Francis Cummins increased that lead to 22-16 after just five minutes. But Wigan hit back with a trio of tries from Martin Hall, Denis Betts and Martin Offiah to put them 28-23 up with Garry Schofield having kicked a Leeds drop goal. Frano Botica had only converted two of the six tries and that would be costly in the end. In the final six minutes, Ellery Hanley scored to put Leeds back in front before Jim Fallon sealed a victory that reduced Wigan's lead at the top to three points.
