Summary: |
It was a surprise to see Martin Offiah turning out for this game against Sheffield because 36 hours earlier he'd been declared unfit for the next three weeks after rupturing a tendon in the Second Test against Australia the previous Saturday. But Wigan had decided to delayed the necessary surgery. Sheffield were looking to beat Wigan at Don Valley for the second season in a row, after a 10-5 win the previous March, and got off to the perfect start with Ryan Sheridan's try getting them 6-0 up. Wigan responded though with four tries from Martin Hall, Va'aiga Tuigamala, Paul Atcheson and Kelvin Skerrett making the score 22-6. Sheridan scored a second try in stoppage time to make it 22-10 and that became 22-16 when Lee Jackson got Bright Sodje over. But on the hour Martin Offiah scored and then Joe Lydon, a blood bin replacement for Barrie McDermott, scored on 70 minutes to make it 36-20. By the time Paul Carr scored it was only ever going to be consolation for Sheffield. |
