In this BBC Grandstand televised cup tie, Wigan took the lead with a long break down the field by Joe Lydon being finished off by Shaun Edwards under the posts, easy conversion for Lydon making it 6-0. Two Mark Conway penalty goals brought that lead down to 6-4 before Trinity went ahead with a try from Andy Kelly. That had them 10-6 up after 22 minute with Conway converting easily. Wigan had work to do and by half time had gone back up 12-10. Failure to tackle Andy Gregory allowed him to slip Kevin Iro for a walk over try and Lydon converted.

A penalty for offside, marched ten metres forward for dissent by Thompson, allowed Lydon to make it 14-10 and soon after Ellery Hanley jinked over for 20-10 with Lydon converting. Then great work from not long on the field substitute Bobbie Goulding got Shaun Edwards over for his second and at 26-10 the game was won. Gary Price did claim a consolation for Wakefield but Wigan wouldn't be stopped. This was a record equalling thirteen successive Challenge Cup victory.
